Share Your World For August 31, 2020

It’s that time again! Melanie has the questions, four from her and four from Roger Shipp. Roger’s questions are all related to the book Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire.

Many local regions, especially rural areas where I live, have haunted houses. Have you ever spent the night in a house that was supposedly haunted? Anything ‘strange” happen? Sorry, no. There used to be several houses in my old neighborhood in Chicago that we thought were haunted, but it turns out that the people who lived in them were just a little strange. Make that very strange…

The Quidditch Cup (riding broomsticks while chasing a small ball) was a huge sporting event in the land of Hogwarts. What is the largest sporting event (or concert, etc.) that you have ever attended? Probably the Notre Dame-Georgia Tech football game at Notre Dame Stadium in 1969. I actually researched it, and that’s the biggest stadium I’ve been to, with a capacity of 60,000. I remember it was colder than a polar bear’s ass…

When you go for a swim, do you prefer an ocean, the seaside lakes, or a pool? A pool. Understand, I don’t swim, but I walk around in the water. It takes the pressure off my knees.

Ron Weasley received a horrid robe to wear as formal wear to the Christmas dance at Hogwarts. Tell about the most ‘ghastly’ fashion statement that you have ever made. Can I just say "the 1970’s" and leave it at that? And the thing was, we thought we looked good…

What is the last song you sang along to? "Bad Moon Rising" by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Max featured it on his blog (which you should be following) today. Whenever I sing it, I always replace the line "there’s a bad moon on the rise" with "there’s a bathroom on the right."

What was your scariest nightmare about? I can’t remember, but I had a night of them after beating the crap out of someone when I was about 6 or 7. The big kids in the neighborhood put me up to it…

What food do you crave most often? Either pizza or chocolate, depending on what time of the day it is.

What’s your grossest bug story? I rode my bicycle under a bunch of trees and kept hitting things. The things were inchworms that were hanging down on threads of silk, and I was covered with them. That might actually have been my scariest nightmare, except I was wide awake. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

See you in the funny papers!

    1. Durham, North Carolina, where Duke is located, is a nice little town. Tobacco built the town and the university. I was working in Raleigh one week, and every night I’d get in the car and drive to Durham to see the Durham Bulls, at the time a Class A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. If you’ve seen the movie “Bull Durham,” you’ve seen the old ballpark, which is now just an open field since they built a new ballpark for the Bulls, who have moved on and are now a Class AAA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. Stepping into the old park was like taking a step back in history…

  2. Oh gosh…the 70s ..I so agree about the fashion…I still remember my brother blue plaid pants with a white belt. I remember having a smock top with frills at the bottom and the stupid top always left creases on my skin..I hated that thing. I have experienced some strange happenings in my own home which I can’t explain. I sang to That’s Amore. You never want to hear my singing. I did see part of a baseball game once in Skydome which was pretty cool. As for nightmares, I often dream of vampires who can’t see me at first but when they do they come for me. I recall seeing Danny Bonaduce( yeah, him) in a car, hitting the median and bursting into flames. I saw him Burn up with all the skin peeling off until all I saw was his skull burning. I have many vivid dreams. Now for bugs, I once stepped on a big beetle and the insides oozed out…gross

  3. I prefer not to swim where I think weird creatures might be lurking. Give me a pool if I’m going to swim, but the fact is that I haven’t gone swimming in many years.

One dream that has been recurring for many years of my life is being trapped in close quarters where I feel like I’m going to suffocate. I first remember having these sorts of dreams after I had gotten interested in cave exploring. Then we went into one cave that required crawling through a long passage that provided little room for movement. That night I had a nightmare about it. I’ve never gone spelunking since, but the nightmare has persisted over that ensuing decades. Fortunately I don’t have this dream often, but the current mandate to wear a mask when out has revived those fears. The mask makes me feel very constricted and I am claustrophobic without a doubt.

  4. Thanks John for Sharing Your World! That bug thing sounds so gross!! Ick. I never thought about inch worms much, I didn’t know they spun cocoons and hung down that way. Good trees to avoid! The 1970s was rather horrifying, fashion wise. Polyester rarely looks good on anyone. I remember that era chiefly because of the maxi dress (which design I still admire), but I had my share of ugly clothing too. I don’t think one could escape it, could they? That series (?) of nightmares sounds a bit like post traumatic stress. You were a feisty little kid, weren’t you? Have a great week!
