It’s that time again! Melanie and Roger have questions for us, and Melanie also has the rules over at her place. And awaaaaaay we go!

First, Roger’s questions, all based on Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix.

What happened to cause you to discover ‘bullies” were real? I guess it would be this guy in our neighborhood who always gave me crap, for no apparent reason other than I was younger and smaller than he was. I remember I was walking down the street one day and I could see him down the block, and when he saw me he came charging down the street. I was sure he was going to plow into me, so I jumped into a doorway and let him run past me. I remember looking down the street to make sure he wasn’t getting ready to run at me from the other direction, and he was just walking along, laughing.

Eavesdropping- When given the chance, how often do you eavesdrop? I used to eavesdrop on my mother all the time, because she would talk on the phone to all her sisters and would tell them things she wouldn’t tell us.

I do remember a time when I was at the airport waiting to get on a plane, and there was a guy across from me talking on his cellphone. After a couple of minutes, I could tell that he was from a competitor and he was talking about a sale that both his and my companies were bidding for. At the end of his conversation, I handed him one of my business cards. Nice guy, and he gave me a copy of his resume to give to our personnel folks. I don’t think he ever got hired, or I would have made $1000.

Escalators, at one time, were the ‘next big thing’. When was the last time you rode an escalator? It’s been quite some time. It might have been my last business trip, when I rode down an escalator from the concourse level to the transportation level. You know what’s a real trip? Walking up a down escalator. It’s actually easier than you think.

Have you ever ‘let’ someone win in a sports competition or a board game? How did it turn out? I’m sure I have, but I don’t remember when.

And now to Melanie’s questions…

Do our fears start with our DNA? I suppose you could say so. Fear causes the adrenaline to start pumping, and your DNA, which determines a lot of how your body reacts to stimuli, certainly has a part in determining where that is. If you mean was I born afraid of water heaters and Emergency Broadcast System tests, of course not. Speaking of which…

If you could have your hair any color for 24 hours, what color would you choose? Red. Not crayon red or maroon or anything, just red like most of my cousins on the Holton side. Mom always said I should have been a redhead.

When do you think a person gets old? When their "get up and go" gets up and leaves.

See you in the funny papers!

  1. Some great answers. How old were you when that bully was around? I was severely bullied..grade school, I got pushed around, my “friends” would say they would be back and they just left me and then said they were bored with me. I had a very bad nickname and was told I am worthless and they tried to beat me up. High school was worse. Told I was a dog and should wear a bag over my head and the spat upon. Every year my mom had to bring me to the hospital for my right hand because they tried to break it but it was badly sprained. Sandwiches thrown at me in the cafeteria. I was told I was worthless and should commit suicide because everyone would be better off. The worst was when I was lifted off the floor by my throat and was told that they will slice my throat from ear to ear one day. So, yeah, I learned really early. As for eavesdropping, I did this a few times, I am guilty. I have ridden an escalator this year but don’t recall where. I have a severe phobia to heights and my mom said I had this even when I was a baby. When my dad would lift me up, I would freeze and start to cry. I was literally a newborn baby. I never let anyone win because I suck at sports so it would be who let me win:) I always wanted deep auburn hair and green eyes. As for age, sometimes I feel like I am 100 years old because of the pain but I like to think I am thinking I am 30. I have met wt yr olds who acted old.

  2. Thanks John for Sharing Your World! My father used to say that “my get up and go, got up and went” thing actually. But then he always was a bit of a free thinker… 😉 Impressive answers today….I think your silver hair suits you very well actually, but I suppose some folks do have a ‘red head’’s unique! I chuckled at that ‘walking up the down elevator’ idea…now I want to try it, but there aren’t any buildings around here that are tall enough to warrant an elevator….plus that whole Covid mess … they’re probably all shut down. O_o Anyway you have a great week in them funny papers, you hear?

  3. Enjoyed your answers, John. I’ve actually walked up a down escalator but if you do it during rush hour at any of the subway stations in the northeast, you better be prepared to wind up in ER. Heck, you can’t even be on the wrong side of the escalator going down or up, in case there are runners on Very Important Business. They’ll knock you down.
