Song of the Day: Pet Shop Boys, “West End Girls”

I was kind of surprised that Pet Shop Boys are still working together. So many bands break up after five or ten years, but Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe are still going strong after almost 40 years. "West End Girls" was their first single. When first released in 1984, it barely made a dent on the charts. They re-recorded it in 1985, and steadily climbed the charts to where it was a Top 10 hit in most of the world, including a #1 in the US, Canada, and the UK, by early 1986.

  1. Hi John – the song certainly comes to mind … even though I’m hopelessly unmusical. I do see however that they’ve never been particularly ‘trying’ … it’s just they’re good. I also note that they were influenced by Derek Jarman – and his opera and theatre staging. Jarman is an interesting character … I briefly wrote about him in May – but at the moment he’s being given an exhibition at the Garden Museum, Lambeth …

I think I’d better stop – take care – Hilary
