Last week, my Battle of the Bands pitted two songs named "More" against each other, with Perry Como singing one and Andy Williams singing the other. I’ve tallied the votes, and here are the results.

Perry Como 4
Andy Williams 9

While it was a decisive win for Andy Williams, it wasn’t a blowout. I’m happy about that. Congratulations to Andy Williams on his win, and to Perry Como who had a respectable number of votes.

My next Battle of the Bands will be on Sunday, November 1. Be there or be square!

I was DEFINITELY planning to use the following ‘Battle Of The Bands’ idea, but since I’m no longer posting BOTB contests for the foreseeable future, I thought I’d present the idea to you, just in case you might be interested in using it. It plays into your ‘Same Title, Different Song’ concept…

IMO, the greatest year for Western movies had to be 1969. In that single year, we were given four truly great Westerns: Paul Newman & Robert Redford in ‘Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid’, John Wayne’s ‘True Grit’, Sam Peckinpah’s ‘The Wild Bunch’, and Sergio Leone’s true masterpiece, ‘Once Upon A Time In The West’.

Ennio Morricone provided the Classical-like musical score:

Ennio Morricone – Once Upon A Time In The West (1969)

In 1979, ten years later, Dire Straits released their second album ‘Communique’ which included a song titled ‘Once Upon A Time In The West’. I’ve never researched it, but I figure it’s almost a sure thing that the Dire Straits song was inspired by the Sergio Leone movie.

Dire Straits – Once Upon A Time In The West (1979)

I love BOTH of these recordings and figured they might make for a good BOTB match-up since, other than the titles, they are complete opposites: Classical-ish versus Rock; mostly Instrumental versus vocal; female lead (singing just a melody line) versus male vocalist singing lyrics.

John, feel free to use this match-up if you are ever so inclined, because it’s unlikely that I will be returning to use it on my own blog any time soon (or ever).

I’m glad you dig the idea.

Another route you might want to consider going in with this match-up is doing a Live versus Live contest. Below are some cool versions of both songs performed before audiences that you can find at YouTube by their video titles:

Patricia Janeckova – Once Upon A Time In The West (Miss Reneta 2012)

Dire Straits – Once Upon a Time In the West [Rockpalast -79 ~ HD]

AMAZING!!! Mark Knopfler – Once Upon a Time in the West (Córdoba 29.04.2019)

        Have fun!

Now I just gotta try to figure out which way I’ll vote, because I think both songs are great!

  2. Not a surprising outcome in my view. I think Andy Williams had a far more memorable hit that most people of a certain age definitely remember.
