The Three Degrees was a singing group from Philadelphia. You might remember they sang with MFSB on "TSOP." Their first hit was “When Will I See You Again (Precious Moments)” in 1974. The song was written and produced by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff and the strings were arranged by Belford "Sinky" Hendricks. Sheila Ferguson sang lead, accompanied by Fayette Pinkney and Valerie Holiday. Ms. Ferguson recalls that when Gamble played it for her, she "threw a tantrum" and told him she would never sing it, because it was too simple. They ended up doing the song, which ended up peaking at #2 on the Hot 100 (kept out of the top spot by "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas), #1 on the Easy Listening chart, #4 on the Soul Chart, #1 on the Canadian Adult Contemporary chart, #1 for two weeks in the UK, and was a Top Ten hit in most of the rest of the world. It achieved Platinum status in the US and Gold status in the UK, and Ms. Ferguson realized that Gamble probably knew what he was talking about…

I haven’t thought of this song in years. All the lines in the song end in questions? Didn’t realize that, but why not?

The beauty of the song was in its simplicity, and making every line a question added to its emotional appeal. Very clever…

I’m enjoying finding them. Soul and R&B really thrived in the ’70’s.
