Song of the Day: Roy Ayers, “Coffy Is The Color”

Coffy was a 1973 blaxploitation film starring Pam Grier as a Black female vigilante who seeks violent retribution from the heroin dealer who got her sister addicted. (This seems to have been the plot for many of Ms. Grier’s movies in the ’70’s.) Its soundtrack was written by vibraphonist Roy Ayers and reached #31 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. "Coffy Is The Color," the theme song for the movie, was sung by Ayers, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Wayne Garfield.

  2. I wish these films would come back on tv because they would be fun to watch again. I don’t know the song but I can picture it being on Soul Train.

    1. I don’t think it was released as a single, so I doubt Soul Train would have played it. Depending on what channels you get, it might show up as a late-night show. Or maybe Pluto TV will set up a Blaxploitation channel (which I’m actually hoping they do).
