Song of the Day: Andrew Gold, “Thank You For Being A Friend”

Nearly everyone remembers this as the theme song for TV series The Golden Girls, which ran from 1985 to 1992 and starred Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty. Cynthia Fee sang the theme for the series, but it was Andrew Gold who wrote the song and recorded it on his third album, 1978’s All This And Heaven Too. It reached #25 on the Hot 100 and #11 on the Cash Box chart.

  1. I was sharing an apartment with my cousin when I was 23…he insisted on watching the Golden Girls and the Waltons (reruns) in the early nineties. This song and the Cheers theme is about as catchy a theme that ever was…

  2. Hi John – I remember watching a few episodes of the Golden Girls … always amusing. I also remember the song – but didn’t know Andrew Gold sang it … lovely hearing it again – take care and stay safe – Hilary

    1. “The Golden Girls” got me through the depression of being in the hospital after my stroke, so I liked the theme song and until a couple of years ago hadn’t heard the original. I actually like his better than the one they used for a theme, but then I guess they were going with the “girls” theme. Glad you enjoyed it!
