Happy Black Friday! Alannah Myles is a Canadian singer-songwriter who’s best known for "Black Velvet," which earned her a Grammy (for Best Female Vocal Performance in 1991) and a Juno award (for Single of the Year in 1990). The song reached #1 in the US, Sweden, and Switzerland, #2 in the UK, Germany, and New Zealand, #3 in Australia and the Netherlands, and #10 in Canada.
I love this song – really lovely to listen to it today, thank you!

I remember thinking she was destined for big things. I also recall getting her confused with Melissa Etheridge on the radio, who was new on the scene at the same time.

They do sound alike, don’t they? Alannah had several more songs that did well on the Canadian AC chart, none of which crossed the border. Sad, really, because she had a hell of a voice…

I had forgotten about this song, but I surely was fond of it when it was released.

She had a good voice. I’m surprised that was her only hit here (she had several more in Canada).

Happy Black Friday! It will be interesting to see if big box stores will survive this season.

I’m sure the big box stores, especially the ones with websites, will be fine. The smaller businesses, not so much.
