Today is the birthday of Robin and Maurice Gibb, two-thirds of The Bee Gees. They would be 71 today. "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" was their comeback single in 1971, after having separated for a couple of years. It reached #1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cashbox Top 100 Singles.
I really like this song and I actually love their music that was not disco, before their huge disco fever days. What a shame the 2 brothers died too young and, I think, from the same cancer?. I know there was an issue when Maurice died…I have to look it up.

Maurice died of a twisted intestine that caused cardiac arrest. There was some controversy over whether they should have operated while he was having a heart attack.

This is one of my favorite Bee Gees tracks. Their harmonies, and the poesy of their lyrics, really are fabulous here.

I really liked them better in their pre-disco days.

Completely understandable. I think a lot of people give them short shrift because of that era, but they were truly gifted.

Right now I’m watching a morning news show and they’re doing a feature on The Bee Gees and the documentary. Their music was incredible. I feel bad for Barry, he apparently misses his brothers more than anything.

As the oldest of four boys, I can relate to Barry’s pain. Thank God all of mine are still here…

I liked their disco period, but not as much as before and after. Their harmony was amazing.

I loved the Bee Gees. They had a terrible time during the “Disco Sucks” time period. That was when they decided to concentrate on writing songs for other artists. They wrote so many great songs. Their harmonies were flawless.
Love,
Janie

They were. There’s something about family timbre…

The Bee Gees have been one of my favorite groups, both as singers and especially as writers of songs.

They’re excellent as both, and one or two of them (Maurice for sure) were great producers.
