Johnny Otis, the "Godfather of Rhythm & Blues" who discovered such acts as Esther Phillips, Etta James, Big Mama Thornton, and Jackie Wilson, would be 99 years old today. He was also a performer, maybe best known for "Willie And The Hand Jive," which he released in 1958. It reached #9 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the R&B chart.
I have to admit…I know the song more from Eric Clapton but this is great.

I probably heard this from Clapton first, so it was nice to hear the original.

Love this one. I grew up listening to my parent’s music and this was a favourite.

It’s the original. There are a lot of covers of it.

This song was often played in my house. My mother thought it was “inappropriate.”

I can understand, although it’s totally innocent and kind of goofy…

Oh wow! I love this song which, to me, is so classic and so much fun to dance to. I hear the Rolling Stones in this….they must have loved this song.

Way I see it, you hear Johnny Otis in The Rolling Stones. They were influenced primarily by blues and R&B artists.

I remember this one well. The hand jive was a trend that we had fun doing way back in the day! I like the song too!

There were a lot of songs that were nothing more than telling you how to do a specific dance back in the day, weren’t there?
