Song of the Day: Earl Hooker, “Off The Hook”

Blues guitarist Earl Hooker, who B. B. King once called "the best of the modern guitarists," would be 91 years old today. "Off The Hook" was recorded live in 1969, shortly before he died.

  1. Hi John – amazing playing … so sad he died so young from tb … thank goodness we can vaccinate against it … I had mine at 14 I think. But loving the clip here … thanks for highlighting it – all the best Hilary

    1. Interesting. I don’t think I’ve been vaccinated against TB. I know I’ve been tested for it several times and had a chest x-ray when I worked around food…

I never saw Earl play live, but it looks like he put on quite a show. I couldn’t find any examples of him playing slide guitar, which I understand was his real forté. I’ll have to see if I can dig one up.

    1. At some point you realize that everyone in the blues community is related (OK, that’s a slight exaggeration)… Glad you like the song! I love instrumentals…
