It’s getting harder to find musicians who have appeared in more than one band, but I haven’t given up yet. Today, we look at Mick Taylor, best known as Brian Jones’s replacement in The Rolling Stones during the ’70’s.
- John Mayall, "I Can’t Quit You Baby": Mick was a member of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers from 1967-1969. "I Can’t Quit You Baby" is a Willie Dixon song they covered on Mayall’s 1967 album Crusade.
- The Rolling Stones, "Sway": After The Rolling Stones parted ways with Brian Jones in 1969, Mayall recommended Taylor to Mick Jagger, who invited him to a recording session for Let It Bleed. Mick thought he was being called in as a session man and was surprised when they asked him back the next day. "Sway" is from their 1971 album Sticky Fingers. Mick co-wrote it with Jagger, but didn’t recive a writing credit. After five years and several albums with the Stones, Mick abruptly quit and worked with Jack Bruce on several of his projects.
- Mick Taylor, "Leather Jacket": Mick has done several solo albums. "Leather Jacket" is from his eponymous 1979 album. He tried on several occasions to get The Rolling Stones to record it, but it never made it to one of their albums, although there are session outtakes that feature the song.
- Bob Dylan, "Jokerman": Mick backed Bob Dylan on several albums from 1983 to 1985. "Jokerman" is from the 1983 album Infidels and also features Mark Knopfler on guitar.
- Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, "I Hate Myself For Loving You": From Joan’s 1988 album Up Your Alley. Mick played the solo.

I don’t know who he is but that doesn’t matter because he is known where it counts. There a a couple here I never heard of.

He’s kind of forgotten now, but he really changed the sound of the Stones when he was with them.

My favorite Stone’s guitarist….he is so good and has his own sound.

Jagger has nothing but good things to say about him. Says Mick was the most musical of the guitarists they had.

I like Brian Jones a lot also but Mick was so talented…Really Ron Wood is my least favorite guitar player…I love his attitude…he is a Stone in attitude but his guitar is thin…Taylors was fat

I’d never heard of him, but I guess I have heard him.

He’s one of the more obscure ones, although he was a huge part of the Stones’ sound in the early ’70’s. They were pretty much dumbstruck when he left.
