Song of the Day: Buddy Defranco & Terry Gibbs Band, “Airmail Special”

Clarinetist and bandleader Buddy DeFranco would be 98 years old today. In addition to leading his own bands, he led the Glenn Miller Orchestra in the ’60’s and ’70’s. I’m most familiar with his work with vibraphonist Terry Gibbs. Here they are with Herb Ellis on guitar and Milt Hinton on bass (no clue as to the pianist or drummer) playing the jazz standard "Airmail Special."

  1. Wow!!! Made my day! Love Jazz! Many people don’t get it; people either love it or hate it. Love the music. Ella was my favorite jazz singer. The best!

    1. Thanks, Moe! I think I’ve loved jazz most of my life. I think Ella did the standards better than anyone. I have her Cole Porter and Jerome Kern “Songbook” albums. Did you ever hear her version of “Mack The Knife,” where she forgot the words and scatted her way through, making up her own words as she went along? She won a Grammy for that…
