Song of the Day: Lotte Lenya, “Moritat von Mackie Messer” (“Mack The Knife”)

Kurt Weill was born on this date in 1900. He and Bertolt Brecht wrote The Threepenny Opera (Die Dreigroschenoper) in 1928. Among the songs was "Moritat von Mackie Messer," better known as "Mack The Knife," which he wrote for his wife, Lotte Lenya, who is referenced in Bobby Darin’s popular recording of the song. After Weill’s death in 1950, Ms. Lenya toured the country, keeping her husband’s music alive.

    1. She kept her husband’s music alive, that’s for certain. And yes, that was her in the movie. If you get a chance, read the books. Fleming was an excellent writer.
