Jazz cornetist Bix Beiderbecke would be 118 years old today, 90 years longer than he lived. In his brief career he appeared on many of the early jazz records, including Hoagy Carmichael’s recording of his own "Georgia On My Mind." From the photos in the video, I believe he was talking about a girl named Georgia, but this is the official song of the state of Georgia, where I live. Besides Carmichael and Beiderbecke, Jack Teagarden appears on trombone, Jimmy Dorsey on clarinet and alto sax, Joe Venuti on violin, and Eddie Lang on guitar.
Another great song! A classic!

It is, and it works whether Georgia is a girl, a state, or a country…

Never thought of it that way, but you’re right it does.

How great and so many famous people playing on this tune. I knew about Bix from a book my brother gave me about music legends.

He was only 28 when he died. Drank himself to death… He was a hell of a talent…

I didn’t remember this song except for the title but then after hearing it I realized I did remember it.

I didn’t know Hoagy Carmichael wrote Georgia On My Mind! I’m accustomed to hearing Ray Charles so a different version is interesting.
Love,

There are a lot of versions of it. Willie Nelson did a great one, and so did Django Reinhardt…

Great song. I like this old version. My absolute favorite rendition is by the Don Shirley Trio from their live in concert album. A soulful rendition that has a classical sound.

The Ray Charles version is the state song of Georgia. Django Reinhardt did an excellent version of it.

Love the song. Love Hoagy’s voice. I imagine the ex president has a lot of Geoergia on his mind.

Hi John – that’s lovely … delightful to listen to. I wonder when Georgia adopted the song … still the video was interesting – thank you … Hilary

Georgia adopted Ray Charles’s version of “Georgia On My Mind” as the state song in 1979. He had a #1 hit in 1961 with it. Georgia Public TV used to play it at sign-off back in the days when they actually signed off.
