    1. That’s the way it was for a long time. It wasn’t all the same kind of stuff on the charts: there was room on the Top 40 for country, instrumental, folk, novelty, middle-of-the-road, movie themes etc. People’s tastes were more eclectic, and the Top 40 and Hot 100 reflected that.
