Somg Lyric Sunday/Song of the Day: Chicago, “Just You ‘n Me”

Jim’s prompt for today is "Endless, Eternity, Everlasting, Forever, Infinity, Omega." The more I thought about it, the more this line kept coming back: "Love me tonight, love me forever and ever." Of course, I couldn’t remember the name of the song or who did it until a few minutes ago.

"Just You ‘n Me" is a song written by James Pankow that appeared on Chicago’s fifth studio album, 1973’s Chicago VI. It’s sung by Peter Cetera and features a soprano saxophone solo by Walt Parazaider and some spiffy wah-wah and phase shifting on the guitar by Terry Kath. It reached #1 on the Cash Box Top 100 Singles, #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, #7 on the Adult Contemporary chart, #3 in Canada, and #23 in Australia. Billboard called it one of the band’s best singles ever, "with a heartfelt and mature love lyric." It was the last song played on WLS in Chicago before they switched to an all-talk format.

As a bonus, here’s "Just You ‘n Me" as played by the Russian band Leonid & Friends, which started as a Chicago cover band (and I swear, they sound more like Chicago than Chicago these days) and has become an international success.

The lyrics, courtesy of Lyrics.com:

You are my love in my life
And you are my inspiration
Just you and me
Simple and free
Baby you’re everything I’ve ever dreamed of
Yeah, yeah

Give me your own special smile
Promise you’ll never leave me
Just you and me
Simple and free

Life is so easy
When you’re beside me
Oh girl

Come hold me close
Never release me
Oh, baby don’t release me
Open your arms, let my love in
Let me in, let me in, let me in
Love me tonight, love me forever
And ever
You know I can’t forget you

Just you and me to carry on
Simple and free my lovely
To flow as one as love’s reward
Lovin’ you girl is so damn easy

Yeah, yeah
You are my love in my life
You are my inspiration
Just you ‘n me
Simple and free
Baby you’re everything I’ve ever dreamed of, yeah yeah

And that’s Song Lyric Sunday (and Song of the Day) for March 28, 2021.

  1. I haven’t heard Just You n’ Me in forever…Thanks John. It’s a really likable song.
I like the cover also… I believe every older band has a tribute one.

    1. Leonid & Friends isn’t just covering Chicago now: they’re also covering some BS&T, Earth Wind & Fire, and did such a tremendous job of “Vehicle” by The Ides of March that Jim Peterik was impressed. They’re all tremendous musicians and the young woman, Ksenia Buzina, is on the verge of stardom. Leonid writes all the arrangements BY EAR, if you can believe that…

      1. That would be a job and a half to do that by ear! Whenever horns are involved I can’t imagine. I will check them out.

    1. I think they’re fantastic. Like I said, they sound more like Chicago than Chicago does now, all are tremendous musicians, and I have a feeling the young woman Ksenia will be a superstar.
