Top Ten Tuesday: 1965, The Next Ten

We’re midway through the ’60’s on our way to… not really sure. Anyway…

#20 – The Supremes, "Stop! In The Name Of Love": Holland-Dizier-Holland wrote and produced it, and it topped the Hot 100 for a week in late March and peaked at #2 on the Soul chart.

#19 – Herman’s Hermits, "Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter": Actor/songwriter Trevor Peacock wrote the song and Tom Courtenay sang it as part of the BBC teleplay The Lads in 1963. The Herman’s Hermits cover was the best-known version: it debuted on the Hot 100 at #12, the third-highest debut for the ’60’s, and reached #1 in the US and Canada.

#18 – Ramsey Lewis Trio, "The ‘In’ Crowd": We talked about this two weeks Ago.

#17 – Gary Lewis & The Playboys, "This Diamond Ring": Gary’s no relation to Ramsey, but he is the son of Jerry Lewis. Written by Al Kooper, Bob Brass, and Irwin Levine, Gary’s cover reacxhed #1 in late February.

#16 – Sonny & Cher, "I Got You, Babe": The first single from their debut studio album, Look At Us, written by Sonny, it spent three weeks at #1 in the US and eventually reached #1 in Canada and the UK. It sold over a million copies and was certified Gold.

#15 – Junior Walker & The All-Stars, "Shotgun": Written by Junior and produced by Berry Gordy and Lawrence Horn. It spent four nonconsecutive weeks at #1 on the R&B chart and peaked at #4 on the Hot 100.

#14 – Mel Carter, "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me": Written by Harry Noble and first sung by Karen Chandler in 1952, but Mel’s cover in 1965 is the one nearly everyone remembers. (Gloria Estefan did a great cover in 1994.) It reached #1 on the Easy Listening chart, #8 on the Hot 100, and #2 in Canada.

#13 – Jewel Akens, "The Birds & The Bees": The story is that the 12-year-old son of Era Records’ owner Herb Newman, but it’s credited to Barry Stuart. This was Akens’s only hit, reaching #3 on the Hot 100.

#12 – Roger Miller, "King Of The Road": Written by Roger and recorded in late 1964, it reached #1 on the Country and Easy Listening charts and #4 on the Hot 100.

#11 – The Beach Boys, "Help Me, Rhonda": Written by Brian Wilson with help from Mike Love, it reached #1, their second #1 since "I Get Around."
