Brazilian singer/songwriter/guitarist João Gilberto, one of the most influential bossa nova musicians, would be 90 years old today. He recorded Getz/Gilberto, considered the album that popularized bossa nova worldwide, in 1964 with saxophonist Stan Getz and pianist/composer Antônio Carlos Jobim, who wrote several tracks for the album. One Jobim track, "Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl From Ipanema"), featuring his then-wife Astrud on vocals, became an international hit, reaching #5 on the Hot 100 in 1964.
Very famous music that I would recognise anywhere, although it does always make me think of lift music.
