BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “Walk, Don’t Run”

Just about everyone (and certainly anyone who follows my blog) has heard The Ventures’ song "Walk, Don’t Run." I was surprised to learn that it wasn’t one of their originals. The original was written by Johnny Smith and recorded by him in 1954, and covered by Chet Atkins in 1958. Let’s put those two versions up against each other and see what you think…

Johnny Smith (1954)

Chet Atkins (1958)

You know the drill from here…

  1. Listen to the two songs.
  2. Decide which song you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

I’ll announce the winner next Thursday, July 8, so vote by next Wednesday to make sure your voice is heard. Don’t forget, anyone can vote.

The lines are now open. Good luck to Johnny and Chet!

  1. Hey John,

I’m squeaking in at the last minute I see. I came by on the 1st, didn’t see a battle and thought perhaps you were sitting it out. Silly me, right? Anywho, easy vote for me. I’m going with CHET ATKINS who’s not only from Knoxville but the cousin of DH’s first cousin’s wife. I hope that made sense. Anywho, fabulous battle!

  2. Very neat Battle, JOHN!

And neither was I aware that ‘Walk, Don’t Run’ wasn’t a Ventures original.

Both of these were good, of course, but I gotta cast my vote for CHET.

I think Chet’s version was cleaner sounding (which may have mostly been due to the recording equipment), but it also had sharper, more interesting dynamics (if that’s the word I’m looking for), like that rhythmic thumping which added another level of depth to the sound.

    Great stuffs!

  3. July 1st already? How’d that happen?!

Chet does a great job with the song as would be expected from a guitar master such as he, but the Johnny Smith version is so old school cool that I’ve got to cast my vote for him.

  4. Johnny gets my vote here — much smoother. I must admit, I’ve been forever spoiled by The Ventures’ version.
