BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “Jitterbug Waltz”

Last Sunday, I used Fats Waller’s "Jitterbug Waltz" for Song Lyric Sunday, and decided I’d use a couple of instrumental versions of it for Battle of the Bands. Here are the two contestants…

Vince Guaraldi Trio: From Vince’s 1962 album In Person.

Bobby Hutcherson Quartet: From the 2007 Jazz Baltica festival.

Those are the contestants. Here’s what I’d like you to do:

  1. Listen to the two songs.
  2. Decide which song you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

I’ll tally the votes and announce the winner next Thursday, July 22, so please cast your vote by then.

The lines are now open. Good luck to Vince and Bobby!

  1. JOHN ~

I very nearly missed this Battle altogether, because I’ve been so busy that I even forgot that the 15th is a BOTB date.

And can you imagine how P.O.’d I’d be at myself if I’d missed this one? Because you know that Jazz is my mistress… as well as my wife… and my girlfriend in every port!

Well, I dug BOTH of these recordings a great deal. That Hutcherson Quartet is awesome! Even better than Nirvana and Katy Perry!

But Vince… Vince… I just love the sound of Vince in the morning! (That’s what I call “MMWJ”, or “Morning Music With Joe” – joe as in coffee.) Plus, Vince, that great dude, is need o’ some love in this contest. So, please give Vince my best, and my vote, when next you see him.

  2. I did not look at the videos because I just wanted it to be the music and I vote for Vince who gave this a nice score in the Jazz style I prefer. I don’t like the xylophone so that did me in with Bobby plus, I felt, they just went off on some tangent dropping any semblance of the actual song. Vince gets my vote

  3. Hi John – me too … the Bobby Hutcherson Quartet … more lively … and how they’re all totally involved/enveloped in the music … such a joy to listen to – cheers Hilary

  4. I’m going with the Bobby Hutcherson Quartet. I like the vibe the xylophone gives, and I think the live performance has more depth and character. I tend to like live performances better than processed recordings anyway.

  5. I am voting for Bobby Hutcherson Quartet mostly because of the video which allows me to see the instruments making the music. They are both very pleasant John and that xylophone is really a lovely instrument.
