Rory’s Song Challenge, 7/19/21

Melanie was doing this, and it looked like fun, and you know me and music challenges… Rory, over at A Guy Name Bloke posts five song requests, and we post five songs in reply. So, without further ado…

A song that you enjoy that isn’t in your own language: Miriam Makeba, "Pata Pata" (in Xhosa, with a couple of English comments)

A great workout/exercise/activity song: You’re asking me? Olivia Newton-John, "Physical"

A song that is almost hypnotic to listen to: Tin Tin, "Toast and Marmalade for Tea"

A song about animals: The Irish Rovers, "The Unicorn"

A really unusual song you love that isn’t well known by others: Dave Brubeck Quartet, "Blue Rondo a la Turk"

  1. Leave it to the Irish Rovers to sound happy and fun but the unicorns get washed away. Get Physical is a perfect choice. I thought of Incence and Clover…that hypnotized me. If I got the title right. I thought of the Lion Sleeps Tonight but also Puff the Magic Dragon. I dont know the last one but I know you showcased the band before. Very fine choices indeed🦄

    1. Anyone who’s played in an Irish pub in the US has to do “The Unicorn.” That’s a very popular song. And I know just how you feel with “Crimson and Clover,” particularly the long version.

  2. Thanks for playing along John! This challenge happens every Monday (I think) and it’d be great to see what songs you come up with! You shared one or two today that I’ve never heard before! And Irish music? Now that’s a workout, although I chose the same song as you for the exercise question! ☺

    1. “Don’t Let Me Down” is an interesting case: it was part of the “Let It Be” soundtrack, but it was left off the original album. Lord only knows why… Good picks!
