Today in 1893, Katharine Lee Bates wrote "America The Beautiful" after admiring the view from Pike’s Peak in Colorado. Pastor Samuel A. Ward from Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey set it to music, and it has become one of the most popular patriotic songs. I know we had a song by Ray Charles the other day, but his performance is iconic, and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate it.
This is one version of this song I can listen to over and over. He was such a gifted musical artist.

That man could have sung the Yellow Pages and I would have enjoyed it.

Likewise… His version of “Georgia on my Mind” is the definitive one for me. He could do just about anything – blues, R&B, soul, country, gospel, rock and even jazz. A tremendous musician…
