Song of the Day: Charlie Christian with the Benny Goodman Orchestra, “Solo Flight”

Jazz guitar legend Charlie Christian was born on this day in 1916. He was one of the first users of electric guitar and transformed the guitar from a rhythm instrument to a solo instrument in its own right, and was an early influence in what was later called bebop and cool jazz. Benny Goodman discovered Christian, who later became an integral part of both The Benny Goodman Sextet and the Benny Goodman Orchestra. He died of tuberculosis in 1942 at the age of 25 after having left his indelible mark in jazz and especially in jazz guitar.

  1. Wow, did he die way too young. This just shows that a man this talented, who died so young, still left an indelible mark in the music world. I am glad you showcased him here.
