Song Lyric Sunday: The Rascals, “A Beautiful Morning”

Jim assigned us "Alluring, Beautiful, Charming, Graceful, and Seductive" as the prompts for today, and I came up with a couple of "beautiful" songs that I thought everyone else would. In looking at what everyone else posted, though, I wasn’t even close. Good job, everyone!

Anyway, my song is The Rascals’ "A Beautiful Morning." Written by Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati, it was released in 1968 and is the first song they released as The Rascals (up to then, they were The Young Rascals). As Wikipedia will tell you, "The song continued the theme of carefree optimism that had distinguished the previous year’s "Groovin’." Maybe not exactly what Jimbo had in mind for today, but God knows we could sure use plenty of carefree optimism.

Way back in the ’90’s (geez, thirty years ago), Fox 97 here in Atlanta held its second, and I think last, Ultimate Oldies Concert, and one of the people on the bill was Felix Cavaliere. When he was announced, the band started to play "Good Lovin’," The Young Rascals’ first hit. He stopped them and said, "No, I want to do this one," and played this. Not the kind of song one generally plays first, but I’m glad he did.

The lyrics, from AZLyrics:

It’s a beautiful morning, ah
I think I’ll go outside for a while
And just smile
Just take in some clean fresh air, boy
No sense in staying inside
If the weather’s fine and you’ve got the time
It’s your chance to wake up and plan another brand new day
Either way

It’s a beautiful morning, ah
Each bird keeps singing his own song
So long
I’ve got to be on my way now
No fun just hanging around
I got to cover ground
You couldn’t keep me down
It just ain’t no good if the sun shines
When you’re still inside
Shouldn’t hide
Still inside
Shouldn’t hide
Still inside, shouldn’t hide

There will be children with robins and flowers
Sunshine caresses each new waking hour

Seems to me that people keep seeing more and more each day
Gotta say, lead the way
It’s okay, brand new day
Gotta say, it’s okay
Brand new day, gotta say, lead the way

And that’s Song Lyric Sunday (and Song of the Day) for August 1, 2021.

  1. I do love this song and it is a beautiful morning despite us waking up in the middle of the night because our dog had the nastiest diarrhoea and right on the carpet as well as the floor. My hubby cleaned that part and we do have a good vacuum that sucks up bad things using water but we will have to order the machine to clean it really well. So our night was….not good but the morning was.

  2. Perfect John, thanks for sharing this classic. This song was written one morning in Honolulu, Hawaii by Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati when the Rascals were invited to perform there and they were inspired by the beauty and magic of all the islands.
