  1. Spitting on hands and hoisting the flag I can understand. Not the other part. Makes me think about how certain rowdiness seems fun and adventurous in the movies and on TV, but if it came down to it in real life… No thanks.

    1. The way I see it, Mencken was talking about a situation where a person is pushed to his or her limits, whre the indignity of the situation becomes far too much to handle. I don’t think he was advocating slitting people’s throats or even suggesting that a person would actually go to those lengths… but that person would certainly think about it…

      1. There are many possible thoughts that could flash through one’s mind, especially when pushed to those limits. I have thought of shaking some people. Ocassionally slapping. Good thing we don’t have to act on our thoughts.
