Pop and Rockabilly singer Johnny Preston was born on this day in 1939 (he died in 2011). Discovered by J. P. Richardson (also known as "The Big Bopper"), Johnny recorded one of Richardson’s songs, "Running Bear," in 1959. It was a #1 hit in the US and the UK in 1960. Preston is a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
Thanks for the link, John. Ironically, I was born in 1959. 😉

So the song is your age? I was born in ’56, when Elvis was just becoming a national star…

That song always made me cry, but I liked it anyway.
Then there’s the “version” sung by Jim Nesbitt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQMgZZvY4WA

For some reason, I confused Johnny Preston with Johnny Horton, who did “North To Alaska” and “The Battle of New Orleans,” but this is another favorite in a similar vein.

Always liked that song. It’s tragic, but it’s got such a good beat to it…
