Song of the Day: The Charlie Watts Quintet, “Bluebird”

We mourn the death of Charlie Watts, drummer for The Rolling Stones and a jazz aficionado and drummer for his own groups, most notably The Charlie Watts Quintet. He was a fine drummer and a good man who stayed faithful to his wife of 57 years, Shirley, to whom we offer our condolences, as well as to his daughter Seraphina and her daughter Charlotte. We also extend our sympathy to his bandmates in The Rolling Stones and his jazz bands. "Bluebird" is a song by Charlie Parker ("Bird") and appears on The Charlie Watts Quintet’s 1991 album From One Charlie.

    1. I can believe it. You’ve heard the story about the time he was in his hotel room and Mick called and said, “hey, where’s my drummer?” Apparently Charlie got dressed in a suit, tie, and polished shoes, went to Mick’s room and hit him in the mouth, saying “I’m not your drummer! You’re my f*cking vocalist!”

  1. Hi John – he was incredibly talented … wasn’t he – it’s sad, but we’re hearing loads of tracks … and I’m sure the day will be blessed with hearing many more. Good choice – thank you … Hilary
