Song of the Day: Kitty Wells, “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels”

Country music pioneer Kitty Wells was born on this day in 1919. She broke down numerous barriers to women’s success in country music, as she was the first woman to have a #1 song with "It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" in 1952. Up until then record companies were reluctant to sign female artists because it was felt that their music didn’t sell well. The song also reached #27 on the Hot 100, making it a crossover hit.
