Lyricist and librettist Alan Jay Lerner was born on this day in 1919. With Frederick Loewe, Burton Lane, and other composers, he wrote a number of shows for the stage and screen, winning three Academy Awards and three Tony Awards. One of his shows with Loewe was 1960’s Camelot, which was made into a film starring Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave. Here, Harris sings the theme song.

I love the tale of King Arthur and would love to see the musical one day. I never thought of Richard Harris as a singer but he can hold a tune. Vanessa Redgrave I never could see as the beautiful Guinevere.

For me, this music and play are inseparable from the White House cultivated in its name and spirit by john and Jackie Kennedy, an oasis of refinement and class, where Pablo Casals and Mieczyslaw Horszowski were invited to play, not Ted Nugent and Kanye West. “Those were the days, my friend…” (Yes, I know both were imperfect individuals, but ….)

+1. On the nose. And what’s more, Americans were proud of them. Oh, I suppose there were some John Birchers and Barry Goldwater, but everyone I knew loved our young president and his beautiful bride (little did we know, …but). That was “Camelot”.

Here, there was all the connection to the Kennedy White House in the early ’60’s. I think nearly everyone who had a phonograph had a copy of the cast album…
