Pete Agnew, bassist for the Scottish band Nazareth, was born on this date in 1946. He once joked that the only reason he took up the bass was because no one else in Dunfermline (Scotland) could play it. He is now the only remaining original member of the group. "Love Hurts" was written by Boudleaux Bryant and originally recorded by The Everly Brothers in 1960. Nazareth’s cover was a #1 hit in Belgium, Canada, The Netherlands, Norway, and South Africa and a #8 hit in the US.
Nazareth is the version I know the best and grew up with.

When I heard Nazareth’s cover, I thought it was an original. I hadn’t learned about the background of the song.

That was me also. I like the Everly Brothers version of it also…but this is the one I know the best.

I am most familiar with Roy Orbison’s rendition.

Oh, gracious. I used to don the headphones and sing along with this one often – much to the dismay of my children that had to listen. I do love this song.

When I first heard it, I didn’t know about the Everly Brothers connection. Regardless, it’s a good song.

I think we owned most of the Everly Brothers albums and I do recall this song, but it did not have the angst and yearning present in Nazareth’s version.
