Pretty standard stuff this week. I was researching singer Maggie Reilly (whose birthday is today; happy birthday to her) and saw where she had sung on a number of Mike Oldfield’s records, including "Family Man," which was released in 1981 and covered by Hall & Oates in 1982. I figured, why not put them back to back and see which people like better? So here we go…

  6. I’m not sure I ever heard this song before. If so, apparently I found it forgettable.

    I liked a lot of Hall & Oates’ stuff in the 1970s, but by the ’80s I found their updated sound rather annoying. It was way over-produced, repetitive, and artificial-sounding. Kind of like “fake Disco” — not even the real thing (which was bad enough).

  9. Hall and Oates for me as well. Their version just had more “depth”, more musical interest for me. Maggie’s vocals didn’t seem to integrate well with the instruments, and it relied too much on percussion and some odd (to me) synthesized sounds.

  10. I vote for Hall & Oates(Went to Youtube to listen). It seemed more cohesive to me where the first one didn’t seem to find the right beat or something. Hard to explain

  11. I never knew the Hall & Oates version was a cover. They certainly did a great job, but I kind of liked Maggie’s as well. I think I’m going to vote for Maggie simply because it was different for me.

  12. I certainly enjoyed the Mike Oldfield version (never heard this one before), but I’ve gotta give my vote to Hall & Oates. They were masters are creating the perfect single release. I love their songs and their version of this song is better in my ears.. Nice battle.
