Singer, songwriter and actor Anthony Newley was born on this day in 1931. With composer John Barry and his songwriting partner Leslie Bricusse, he wrote the lyrics for the theme for the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger, which was a hit for Shirley Bassey that year. Here is his own rendition of the song.
Interesting version and I like it but not nearly as much as the one by Shirley Bassey.

Newley wrote the song, and my guess is he’d probably like Dame Shirley’s more than his. I know I do–it’s iconic.

Thanks John – this was fun to listen to … I can see that Shirley Bassey took some thoughts from Newley’s rendition … thank you so much – cheers Hilary
