Song of the Day: Buddy Rich, “Caravan”

Jazz drummer extraordinaire Buddy Rich was born on this day in 1917. He started drumming at the age of 2 and in the 1930’s played with Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, and Harry James, and after WWII founded the Buddy Rich Orchestra. I remember him from his frequent visits to The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in the ’70’s. "Caravan" is a jazz standard that was written by Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington in 1936.

  1. I’ve played this in a band before (adapted for a stage band). My part wasn’t as much fun as they were having with their solos!
