Jim assigned us the prompts "Communication, Information, News, Telephone," which came to him from Di. I thought of two songs that could fit this, which is good because someone might have come up with this one already…
"It’s Good News Week" is a song written and produced by Jonathan King and recorded by the British band Hedgehoppers Anonymous in 1965. There were two versions recorded, one for the US and the other for the UK. Here’s the one that came out in the US.
YouTube user svendhenrik00 included the lyrics in the comments…
Someone’s dropped a bomb somewhere,
Contaminating atmosphere and blackening the sky
It’s good news week
Someone’s found a way to give
The rotting dead a will to live, go on and never die
Have you heard the news? What did it say?
Who’s won that race? What’s the weather like today?
It’s good news week
Lots of blood in Asian hell, they’ve butchered up their sacred cow,
they’ve got a lot to eat
It’s good news week
Doctors finding many ways of wrapping brains in metal trays
To keep us from the heat
It’s good news week
Someone’s dropped a bomb somewhere
Contaminating atmosphere and blackening the sky
It’s good news week
Someone’s found a way to give
The rotting dead a will to live, go on and never die
Have you heard the news? What did it say?
Who’s won that race? What’s the weather like today?
It’s good news week
Lots of blood in Asian hell, they’ve butchered up their sacred cow,
they’ve got a lot to eat
It’s good news week
Doctors finding many ways of wrapping brains in metal trays
To keep us from the heat
To keep us from the heat
The version for the UK replaced the lines "Lots of blood in Asian hell, they’ve butchered up their sacred cow, they’ve got a lot to eat" with "Families shake the need for gold by stimulating birth control, we’re wanting less to eat."
The song reached #5 in the UK and #48 in the US. I checked the WLS surveys, and while I remember hearing it in ’65, I can’t seem to find it.
Anyway, that’s Song Lyric Sunday for October 17, 2021.

What a great song! I love the upbeat rock vibe and the vocals too!

I love this song. It was the theme song for a satirical game show on TV in Oz in about the late 90s called the same name. I watched the show every week so am very familiar with the song, but of course can’t be sure which version we had.

Probably didn’t matter that much because I doubt they would have gotten to the verse in question. That said, my guess is the UK version.

I don’t remember this song. Maybe I blocked it out. But it does show that the lopsidedness of mainstream media is not new. For the real good news stop by my blog any Tuesday for my GNT post. I usually have it up by 10:30.

It wasn’t too popular in this country, evidently, though I remember hearing it a lot. Glad you like it!

I hadn’t heard it in ages, either, so I was glad to have an excuse to play it.
