BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “Ménilmontant”

A little swing this time around: "Ménilmontant" is a 1938 song by Charles Trenet, named for one of the neighborhoods of Paris. Here are the contestants.

Avalon Jazz Band

From 2012. The band is Tatiana Eva-Marie, vocals; Kate Dunphy, accordion; Adrien Chevalier, violin; Koran Agan, guitar; and Eduardo Belo, bass.

Ludovic Beier & Radical Gipsy

From 2013. Radical Gipsy is Gabriele Giovanini, lead guitar; Daniele Gai, rhythm guitar and vocal; and Giuseppe Civiletti, bass. Ludovic Beier plays accordion.

You know the drill:

  1. Listen to the two songs.
  2. Decide which song you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

I will count the votes on November 22, 2021 at noon and announce the winner, so be sure and vote before then.

The lines are now open. Bon chance to Avalon Jazz Band and Radical Gipsy!

  1. Oh my…apples or oranges! They are both so great but I lean to Avalon because of her vocals and the amazing violin and guitar solo. I love the accordion and so it was nice to see them in both musical pieces.

  2. Well, hot-damn, JOHN!

This was the toughest BOTB decision I’ve had to make in recent memory! Last night, I listened to BOTH songs 2 or 3 times each while I was composing an epic Email (EEEmail) to a friend, and I just couldn’t decide. So I returned again this morning to give ’em both another listen.

    On any given day,
    I could bote either way!

And although that accordion player in the second group very nearly single-handedly steals the vote away from them, I’m going cast my two pennies into Avalon Jazz Band’s kitty.

Man, I really LOVED both of these recordings and hated to have to decide between ’em.

    Django lives!!

  3. Everything here is unfamiliar to me, but it sounds good.

My choice is the version by Avalon. By far I prefer the vocalist–the female voice fits the song well. The instrumentation is great and the big plus for me is the jazz violinist.

I’m sitting out BOTB this round, but I plan to join in on Dec 1.

  4. Those Radical Romani are really rockin’, but Tatiana Eva-Marie is a living treasure of this planet who cannot be compared to mere mortals (and her band is superlative—beside organizing and leading AJB, she edits a literary magazine). Consider this a vote.
