Song of the Day: Fred Astaire, “One For My Baby (And One More For The Road”

Lyricist Johnny Mercer was born on this date in 1909. Johnny wrote the lyrics (and occasionally the music) for over 1500 songs with composers such as Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael, Jerome Kern, Victor Schertzinger, Jimmy Van Heusen, and Henry Mancini. He also started Capitol Records with Buddy DeSylva and Glenn E. Wallichs. Mercer and Arlen wrote "One For My Baby (And One More For The Road)" in 1941, and it was used in the 1943 film The Sky’s The Limit starring Fred Astaire. Here is the performance from that movie.

  1. This is a movie I have yet to see but thank you for showing another excellent song and dance routine by the great Astaire. I didn’t know he sang this song as I only heard Sinatra sing it but I prefer this one. Astaire was a pretty good drummer and would often perform with other beats or tap dance in between the song notes. It’s pretty cool actually. Many great song writers from Irving Berlin to George Gershwin wrote songs with Astaire in mind.
