Singer and sogwriter Terry Stafford, who died in 1996, would be 80 years old today. "Suspicion," his 1964 hit, was originally recorded by Elvis Presley. Terry took it to #5 in 1964. Here he is on an episode of American Bandstand.

You hear him sing this fun song and I didn’t expect him to have a Southern drawl. I like that little organ beat behind it…very 1960s. Dick Clark looks tiny beside him. Those were the innocent days.

Elvis didn’t sing with a drawl, either, but Terry’s is real strong.
Dick Clark was only 5’8″, and Terry Stafford was 6’3″, so Terry was a full head taller.

Terry and Elvis sound very similar, but I like Terry’s backing band better.

I was a big fan of Stafford’s version of this song when it first came out. This was one of the 45’s that I bought back when I was a kid with not much money. I still like this song and have since obtained the CD of Terry Stafford’s “best” recordings.

Exactly! My best money sources were scouring the car for change and cleaning out the junk drawers. A quarter really went a long way back then.

It is. When two-button jackets and wider lapels came into vogue, there were places that would take a three-button jacket and iron it so that the top button and buttonhole became part of the lapel. One of my professors had a whole wardrobe like that…
