Song of the Day: Dave Brubeck Quartet, “Take Five”

Alto saxophonist and composer Paul Desmond was born on this day in 1924. As a member of The Dave Brubeck Quartet in the ’50’s and ’60’s, he played on the groundbreaking album Time Out, in which all the songs were written in time signatures other than 4/4 or 3/4. He composed what might be the most famous jazz piece of the late 20th Century, "Take Five."

    1. It takes me to a cocktail lounge in the early-to-mid 1960’s, where I’m in a tuxedo and my date is in a floor-length dress. She’s drinking a Martini, I’m drinking a Manhattan and smoking Benson & Hedges menthol cigarettes…. don’t get me started…
