Alto saxophonist and composer Paul Desmond was born on this day in 1924. As a member of The Dave Brubeck Quartet in the ’50’s and ’60’s, he played on the groundbreaking album Time Out, in which all the songs were written in time signatures other than 4/4 or 3/4. He composed what might be the most famous jazz piece of the late 20th Century, "Take Five."
Love this piece!! Happy Thanksgiving.

It takes me to a cocktail lounge in the early-to-mid 1960’s, where I’m in a tuxedo and my date is in a floor-length dress. She’s drinking a Martini, I’m drinking a Manhattan and smoking Benson & Hedges menthol cigarettes…. don’t get me started…

Well, the song definitely reflects that type of atmosphere. Seems you are holding back a good story, John!

My big brother, God rest his soul, loved Dave Brubeck and had all his albums on LP, so I heard all of them approximately ten thousand times when I was growing up. Great music.

I became a jazz fan early in life thanks to “Take Five” and the soundtrack from “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Oh, and Dad’s Dixieland records…
