Mannheim Steamroller, the neoclassical New Age group formed by percussionist Chip Davis, gets very popular around this time of the year, mostly because they’ve made a number of album of Christmas music. They seem like a logical choice for this time of the year, so here are five by them.
- Carol of the Bells
- God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen
- Little Drummer Boy
- Hallelujah
- Silent Night
And that’s Five For Friday, December 10, 2021.
I like the version of Silent Night but I am just not much into their music. It is too disco meets Christmas for me. They are unique in their takes of the standards though.

They have a unique way of presenting the songs, though not everyone likes that approach.

That’s about all the music of theirs that I’m familiar with, but it’s good stuff…

Thanks John – these five are a great selection – I enjoy some of the Christmas songs – not the naff ones. Cheers Hilary

Everything they did is on YouTube, so it was a cinch putting the list together. Glad you liked it!

I think the bulk of what they’ve recorded is Christmas songs. Plus it seems like the only time of the year most people even recognizes them…

I miss working Mannheim. Not only because of their music but also because they were such nice people.

I never knew they were an American act. I always thought they were German…

They come from the US. Chip Davis, the founder, wrote ads featuring a fictional trucker, C.W. McCall, who eventually recorded the song CONVOY, with a coworker, Bill Fries on vocals. Big hit and source of the movie which starred Burt Reynolds and was the foundation for Davis to produce music and start Mannheim
Steamroller using the technique established by a German composer named Mannheim.
