Percussionist, bandleader, and comedian Spike Jones was born on this day in 1911. Wikipedia tells us Jones "was an American musician and bandleader specializing in spoof arrangements of popular songs and classical music. Ballads receiving the Jones treatment were punctuated with gunshots, whistles, cowbells, hiccups, burps and outlandish and comedic vocals. Jones and his band recorded under the title Spike Jones and His City Slickers from the early 1940s to the mid-1950s, and toured the United States and Canada as ‘The Musical Depreciation Revue’." I arrived in a world close enough in time to Spike Jones’s that I was ROFL’d, as we say now, by his oeuvre. He seemed one of the funniest people in the world. Looking at that clip today, the first thing I thought was “What an odd world; nobody is wearing masks.” Then the woman smoking a cigarette, and the man with the cigar. So much has changed. Humor is rooted in freshness and unexpectedness; as the world moves on, fewer and fewer things can be unexpected, I suppose.
But in his place and time, Spike Jones was great.

Putting something away for a few years and then taking it out again can sometimes make something seem fresher. I hadn’t seen this until I found it on YouTube a few years ago, and got a huge laugh out of it…
