Pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader Stan Kenton was born in this day in 1911. While he had a number of popular hits in the ’40’s through the ’60’s, Stan was always looking for the "next thing," whether it was music that combined classical with jazz, jazz with progressive elements, or jazz with Latin influences. Many of Kenton’s arrangements were written by Pete Rugolo, who was married to singer June Christy. Here June sings with the Stan Kenton Orchestra on their 1945 single "Tampico," which reached #2 in the US.
I love this and never heard it before. She has a great voice and reminds me a little bit of Doris Day.

June was pretty much a dead ringer for Doris back then. I love her voice…
