
The late, great comedian Charlie Callas was born on this day in 1924. In addition to being one of the funniest people I ever saw, he was also a fantastic drummer. In this clip from The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, on which he was a frequent guest, Charlie plays Gene Krupa’s "Drum Boogie" with Doc Severinen and the NBC Orchestra. The video quality is not the best, but it’ll give you some idea.
Wow! And I thought he was just another pretty face.

He was one of those guys I always thought was a scream. He’d have me on the floor laughing with some of his stuff. A total nut… I like that quality in comedians…
