Song of the Day: Van McCoy, “The Hustle”

Performer and record producer Van McCoy was born on this day in 1940. While he’s best known for his 1975 hit "The Hustle," he has over 700 songwriting credits and produced records for Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Stylistics, and others. This was a #1 hit in the US and started a dance craze right around the time I started hanging out in clubs (could never do this; I dance like an elephant with plantar fasciitis).

  1. I recall trying to learn the dance steps in my neighbour’s yard surrounded by chickens and geese. This brings back thoughts of The Love Boat and Soul Train. The outfits just makes me laugh especially those gals in bikini tops with balloon pants that are slit so you can see their legs and they hug just above their..er….well, you know.

  2. This one reminds me of 1975….we moved for a brief while and I remember my sister’s paneling room, shag carpet, and the latest teen throbs on her wall…with me…I had just got my first Beatle poster as an 8 year old rolling it out on my wall.
Songs do take you back in time.
