Song of the Day: Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band, “Ice Cream For Crow”

Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Don Van Vliet, better known by the stage name Captain Beefheart, was born on this day in 1941. "Ice Cream For Crow" was the title track for his 1982 (and last) album. He made a video for the song, but MTV rejected it, claiming it was "too weird." The video was shown on Late Night With David Letterman, and was accepted into The Museum of Modern Art. His reaction was "I don’t want my MTV if they don’t want my video."

  1. I have to look it up since I don’t know it or the man. 10 to 1 I do know him but can’t put the 2 together….music and the man.

  2. Beefheart fan, here. China pig my favorite. The cover of Trout Mask Replica (with its nontrout catfish mask) was among the best of all time. Guy was too far ahead of his time. That Frank Zappa idolized him is commendation enough. Saw him live.
