Groundbreaking jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli, who with Django Reinhardt created the sound known as Gypsy jazz, was born on this day in 1908. I had the pleasure of seeing him at Massey Hall in Toronto circa 1995. By then it took two people to get him onto the stage so that he could play, but when he started playing it was Paris in the 1930’s again. This video of La Quintette du Hot Club de France playing "J’Attendrai" is the only clear video of Django playing on YouTube, but it also features some fine playing by Stephane.

  I was. I bought the paper and saw that he was playing that night, called and got a ticket and saw him. I sat in the upper level and could see the port wine stain on his head…
