Song Lyric Sunday: Miranda Lambert, “Automatic”

Jim got today’s prompt from Melanie, who came up with "Automated, Mechanical, Modern, Robotic" for her prompt. I have a feeling I won’t be the only person who chooses this one, so I’m going to try to be first…

"Automatic" is from Miranda Lambert’s fifth studio album, 2014’s Platinum. It was written by Nicolle Galyon, Natalie Hemby, and Ms. Lambert and was the lead single off the album. The song won the 2014 Country Music Association Award for Single of the Year, the 2014 CMT Music Award for Best Female Video, and the 2015 Academy of Country Award for Song of the Year. It reached #3 on the Country Airplay chart, #4 on the US Hot Country Songs chart, and #1 on the Canadian Country chart.

The lyrics, from AZLyrics:

Quarter in a payphone
Drying laundry on the line
Watching Sun Tea in the window
Pocket watch for tellin’ time
Seems like only yesterday I’d get a blank cassette
Record the country countdown ’cause I couldn’t buy it yet

If we drove all the way to Dallas just to buy an Easter dress
We’d take along a Rand McNally, stand in line to pay for gas
God knows that shifting gears ain’t what it used to be
I learned to drive that 55 just like a queen, three on a tree

Hey, whatever happened to waitin’ your turn
Doing it all by hand,
‘Cause when everything is handed to you
It’s only worth as much as the time put in
It all just seemed so good the way we had it
Back before everything became automatic

If you had something to say
You’d write it on a piece of paper
Then you’d put a stamp on it
And they’d get it three days later
Boys would call the girls
And girls would turn them down
Staying married was the only way to work your problems out

Hey, whatever happened to waitin’ your turn
Doing it all by hand,
‘Cause when everything is handed to you
It’s only worth as much as the time put in
It all just seemed so good the way we had it
Back before everything became automatic

Automatic

Let’s roll the windows down
Windows with the cranks
Come on let’s take a picture
The kind you gotta shake

Hey, whatever happened to waitin’ your turn
Doing it all by hand,
‘Cause when everything is handed to you
It’s only worth as much as the time put in
It all just seemed so good the way we had it
Back before everything became automatic

Yeah

Automatic

And that’s Song Lyric Sunday for February 20. 2022.

    1. She’s one of the new breed of country singers that I like. A lot of them are pop singers who wear cowboy boots and Stetsons, so I appreciate it when a country singer actually sings country.

  1. Very good choice! I really like this song, and actually pretty much every song she sings. I’ve seen her in concert before, and she sure puts on a great show! I remember watching her early on, as she was on the talent show called Nashville Star (like American idol) and she did really good on there.:)
