Country guitar legend, singer, and comedian Roy Clark was born on this day in 1933. He was the host of the TV show Hee Haw throughout its run, where he demonstrated his prowess with the guitar, banjo, and fiddle. From early in his career, here he plays "12th Street Rag," where he also takes the opportunity to clown around a little bit.
When the “best” guitarists get brought up…he should be listed among the very best. I grew up watching him.

I think so, too, but you never see him on any iists. Maybe it’s because of “Hee Haw” or some of the clowning around he does, but the guy’s got serious chops.

It has to be John… what was it called? “Chicken picking?”…. That style is jaw dropping when done right… and he does

He was one of the best guitarists but is shadowed by rock stars nowadays.

The interesting thing is that a lot of those rock guitarists might have started playing guitar because they saw Roy on “Hee Haw.” And if you saw them and asked who their influences were, more than a few would say Roy Clark.

I didn’t realize how talented Roy Clark was for the longest time.

He was pretty fantastic as a guitar player. I’d almost put him on a par with Glen Campbell.
