Jim got this week’s prompt from Di, "Anxiety, Delight, Emotions, Pain, Pride, Relief." I thought of this song automatically, because it seems (to me, anyway) to have elements of all of the above.
"Breakout" is from Swing Out Sister’s debut album, 1987’s It’s Better To Travel. The writing credit goes to the whole band: Corinne Drewery, vocals, Andy Connell, keyboards, and Martin Jackson, drums. The song reached #1 on the US Adult Contemporary chart, #6 on the Hot 100, #4 in the UK and #6 in Ireland.
When explanations make no sense
When every answer’s wrong
You’re fighting with lost confidence
All expectations gone
The time has come to make or break
Move on, don’t hesitate
And breakout
Don’t stop to ask
And now you’ve found a break to make at last
You’ve got to find a way
Say what you want to say
Breakout
When situations never change
Tomorrow looks unsure
Don’t leave your destiny to chance
What are you waiting for
The time has come to make your break
Breakout
Don’t stop to ask
And now you’ve found a break to make at last
You’ve got to find a way
Say what you want to say
Breakout…
Don’t stop to ask
Now you’ve found a break to make at last
You’ve got to find a way
Say what you want to say
Breakout
Some people stop at nothing
If you’re searching for something
Lay down the law
Shout out for more
Breakout and shout
Day in day out
Breakout
Breakout
Don’t stop to ask
And now you’ve found a break to make at last
You’ve got to find a way
Say what you want to say
And breakout
Don’t stop to ask
And now you’ve found a break to make at last
You’ve got to find a way
Say what you want to say
And breakout…
(Don’t) Lay down the law (stop)
Shout out for more (to ask)
Breakout and shout day in day out
Ooh, breakout
Breakout
Breakout
Lay down the law
Shout out for more
Breakout and shout day in day out

They really do. They’re still quite innovative. They’re still quite popular in Japan, aren’t they?

Great 80s track. Has a Level 42 vibe to it.

They were contemporaries, I think. That was the late ’80’s-early ’90’s sound.

I’m surprised… it was real popular in the mid-’80’s.
